A través de una estructura de siete momentos clave situados entre 1952 y 1956, el autor Pierre Mertens reconstruye una historia de ficción que entrelaza las vivencias biográficas del poeta con sus dilemas morales y las dificultades de la escritura. La obra profundiza en la figura de Benn, quien a diferencia de muchos intelectuales que huyeron del nazismo, decidió permanecer en Alemania, convirtiéndose brevemente en un compañero de viaje de la barbarie.
