In 'The Romantic Exiles', Edward Hallett Carr presents us with a gallery of portraits from the 19th century, where Russian liberals and anarchists, exiled throughout Europe, gather to debate their political theories and clamor for a revolution to overthrow the Tsarist autocracy. These artists of conspiracy, under the constant threat of the Russian secret service, lived intense and dramatic lives. Some, like Aleksandr Herzen, were admitted to the Marxist pantheon, while others, like Bakunin, were valuable agitators in the first stage of the revolution. Carr, a renowned specialist in Russian history, combines history and anecdote to unravel the turbulent lives of these characters, where revolutionary fervor is united with an incorrigible romanticism. This edition includes a presentation by Pere Gimferrer.

Edward Hallett Carr was a British English historian, diplomat, journalist and international relations theorist, and an opponent of empiricism within historiography. Carr was best known for A History of Soviet Russia, a 14-volume history of the Soviet Union from 1917 to 1929, for his writings on international relations, particularly The Twenty Years' Crisis, and for his book What Is History? in which he laid out historiographical principles rejecting traditional historical methods and practices.
