En 1791, durante el reinado de Carlos IV y María Luisa de Parma, España es un imperio donde Goya se ha convertido en pintor de la corte. Entre sus clientes se encuentran Lorenzo Casamares, un influyente dominico, e Inés Bilbatua, la joven hija de un rico hacendado. Desde el momento en que Lorenzo ve un esbozo de Inés, sus destinos se entrelazan en una historia de acusaciones, persecuciones inquisitoriales, amor y cárcel, que se extiende hasta la invasión napoleónica y el reinado de Fernando VII. Jean-Claude Carrière was a French novelist, screenwriter and actor. He received an Academy Award for best short film for co-writing Heureux Anniversaire (1963), and was later given an Honorary Oscar in 2014. He was nominated for the Academy Award three other times for his work in The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), That Obscure Object of Desire (1977), and The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988). He also won a César Award for Best Original Screenplay in The Return of Martin Guerre (1983).
