«Made in Madagascar» is an ethnographic study by Andrew Walsh on sapphires, ecotourism, and the global market, in paperback.
In the Ankarana region (northern Madagascar), sapphire miners, conservationists, ecotourists, and gem traders have coexisted since the 1990s. Although from the outside they seem like opposing worlds, Walsh shows that the Malagasy see them as united: both respond to the foreign demand for natural wonders.
Published in 2012 in English, it is part of the series Teaching Culture: UTP Ethnographies for the Classroom.
Intended for university anthropology courses and readers interested in Madagascar, globalization, and the trade in natural resources.
