In 'Left-Wing Melancholia: After the Utopias,' Enzo Traverso explores the melancholic tradition within revolutionary history, analyzing how the collapse of communism in 1989 impacted collective memory and future projections. Through a diverse archive of theories, testimonies, and images, Traverso examines the leftist culture of defeat, the Marxist conception of memory, the construction of mourning, and the tension between ecstasy and sorrow in revolutionary bohemia. The author focuses on key figures such as Marx, Benjamin, Trotsky, and Bensaïd, and analyzes a rich iconography ranging from Courbet's paintings to Soviet posters and films by Eisenstein, Angelopoulos, Marker, and Loach. Traverso invites us to rethink socialism in a time when its memory is lost and forgotten, seeking to redeem it without falling into nostalgia.
