In 'Míster Witt en el Cantón', Ramón J. Sender transports us to Cartagena in 1873, during the cantonal uprising, through the eyes of Mr. Witt, an English engineer married to a Spanish woman. Witt, a privileged witness to the events, experiences a mixture of rejection and admiration for the insurrection. The novel stands out for its vibrant recreation of a significant historical event of 19th century Spain and for the profound psychological portrait of its protagonist, a righteous and methodical man who faces moral and personal dilemmas amidst political chaos.

Ramón José Sender Garcés was a Spanish novelist, essayist and journalist. Several of his works were translated into English by the distinguished zoologist, Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell, including Seven Red Sundays , Mr Witt Among the Rebels and The War in Spain (Contraataque).
