«Opus nigrum» is the historical novel by Marguerite Yourcenar, published by Alfaguara in hardcover (418 pages, in Spanish).
The novel follows Zeno, a 16th-century physician, philosopher and alchemist, in a world divided between medieval tradition and the new winds of the Renaissance. The title refers to the alchemical operation in which matter is separated and dissolved, and serves as a symbol of the trials of the spirit on its path to freedom.
Work originally published in French as «L'Œuvre au noir»; this edition belongs to the Alfaguara Literaturas collection. The novel received the Prix Femina.
For readers of historical fiction and European fiction, with an interest in the Renaissance, alchemy and French classics.
