«Opus nigrum» is the historical novel by Marguerite Yourcenar, published by Punto de Lectura in paperback (378 pages, in Spanish).
The title refers to an old alchemical formula symbolizing the separation and dissolution of matter, and the trials of the spirit in its liberation. The story follows Zeno, a sixteenth-century physician and alchemist, and reflects the clash between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance through the pursuit of knowledge and freedom against intolerance.
This Spanish edition, published in 2003, is the translation of the novel «L'Œuvre au noir» by Marguerite Yourcenar.
For readers of historical fiction and literary fiction interested in characters who challenge the beliefs of their time.
