Baltasar Gracián's 'Oráculo manual y arte de prudencia' is a work belonging to the didactic prose of the Baroque period. Through three hundred commented aphorisms, it offers a set of rules to succeed in a complex and crisis-ridden society. Gracián advises the reader on how to be shrewd, intelligent, and prudent, summarizing precepts from his previous works dedicated to moral philosophy. The work presents a strategic system of thought, defined even in its contradictions, to navigate a hostile and deceptive world, where appearances often prevail over virtue and truth.

Baltasar Gracián y Morales, better known as Baltasar Gracián, was a Spanish Jesuit priest and Baroque prose writer and philosopher. He was born in Belmonte, near Calatayud (Aragón). His writings were lauded by Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. He is best known for his book The Art of Worldly Wisdom (1647), but his novel El Criticón (1651-57) is considered his greatest work.
