Synopsis of Parejas

En una apartada y pequeña comunidad de Nueva Inglaterra, llamada Tarbox, todo parece transcurrir en armonía en un grupo de parejas amigas que practican entre sí intercambios sexuales. Un día, llega a la ciudad un joven matrimonio que pronto se incorpora a los juegos amorosos del reducido círculo de amigos, que viven como en una familia, según rituales muy estrictos, rodeados de un aura mágica, casi religiosa. Pero, lenta e imperceptiblemente, como ocurre en las mejores familias, algo empieza a distorsionarse y resquebrajarse en aquella atmósfera de idílica concordia. Las relaciones conyugales, puestas a prueba, van imponiendo sus propias leyes por encima de las normas que rigen la armonía comunitaria. Y aparecen los temibles y sempiternos juegos, infinitamente más sutiles y crueles, de la competencia, la desconfianza, la insidia, las intrigas y los celos. Updike ahonda aquí, con simpatía pero sin miramientos, en la relación sexual y amorosa, siempre tan vulnerable, entre las parejas.
