«Piazza d'Italia» is Antonio Tabucchi's popular fable, published by Editorial Anagrama in paperback (176 pages, in Spanish).
In a Tuscan village surrounded by marshes, three generations of rebels traverse Italy's history from unification to liberation. Characters such as Garibaldo, Quarto and Volturno are dragged into wars and journeys across Europe, Africa and America. The women mix reality with fantasies and horoscopes. An anti-history of Italy with humor and melancholy.
Work originally published in 1975, winner of the L'Inèdito prize. Translation by Carlos Gumpert and Xavier González Rovira. Number 397 in the Panorama de narrativas collection.
For readers of contemporary fiction and Italian literature who want to discover Antonio Tabucchi's narrative beginnings.

Antonio Tabucchi was an Italian writer and academic who taught Portuguese language and literature at the University of Siena, Italy. Deeply in love with Portugal, he was an expert, critic and translator of the works of Fernando Pessoa from whom he drew the conceptions of saudade, of fiction and of the heteronyms. Tabucchi was first introduced to Pessoa's works in the 1960s when attending the Sorbonne. He was so charmed that when he returned to Italy, he took an introductory course in Portuguese for a better comprehension of the poet.
