«Retablo jovial» is Alejandro Casona's collection of theatrical farces, published by Ediciones Cátedra in paperback (160 pages, in Spanish).
The volume brings together five short farces in which Alejandro Casona adapts texts from the Spanish literary tradition. «Sancho Panza en la ínsula» recreates episodes from Don Quixote; the other four draw on tales and apologues from different regions of Spain. They are comic and simple pieces that bring distant eras' themes and characters closer to the public.
It belongs to the Cátedra base collection and includes an introduction and a «Después de la lectura» section. The work was originally published in 1949.
Aimed at students of theatre and Spanish literature and at readers who want to approach the farces of the classical and popular tradition.

Alejandro Rodríguez Álvarez, known as Alejandro Casona was a Spanish poet and playwright born in Besullo, Spain, a member of the Generation of '27. Casona received his bachelor's degree in Gijon and later studied at the University of Murcia. After Franco's rise in 1936, he was forced, like many Spanish intellectuals, to leave Spain. He lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina until April 1962, when he definitively returned to Spain.
