«Shanghai Baby» is the semi-autobiographical novel by Wei Hui, published by Constable & Robinson Ltd in paperback, in English.
Coco is a young waitress in Shanghai who aspires to be a writer. Torn between Tian Tian, a tender but drug-addicted man, and Mark, a married Westerner who awakens in her an intense passion, the novel follows her process of self-discovery in a China undergoing profound social and sexual transformation.
The novel was publicly burned in China for its sensual nature and irreverent style. Originally published in Chinese in 1999, this English edition includes the translation by Bruce Humes.
