Set in 1980s Glasgow, under the iron rule of Margaret Thatcher, this moving novel tells the story of Agnes Bain, a woman who dreams of a better life away from poverty and unemployment. After being abandoned by her last husband in a run-down neighborhood, Agnes turns to alcohol, causing those around her to leave one by one. Only her youngest son, Shuggie, remains by her side, determined to help her despite his own struggles and the bullying he faces for being different. It is a heartbreaking tale of unconditional love and the fight for survival in a hostile environment.
