«Soldados de Salamina» is the historical novel by Javier Cercas, published by Maxi-Tusquets in paperback (208 pages, in Spanish).
A young journalist discovers a little-known episode from the final months of the Spanish Civil War: during the Republican retreat towards France, a group of Francoist prisoners are shot; Rafael Sánchez Mazas, Falange ideologue, manages to escape and an anonymous soldier spares his life. The narrator investigates who that militiaman was and why he did not turn him in, in an inquiry into memory, identity and chance.
This edition is volume 2 of the MAXI collection and was published on May 1, 2007; the novel originally appeared in 2001.
For readers of historical fiction and contemporary Spanish narrative interested in the Civil War and historical memory.
