«Suddenly in the Depths of the Forest» is Amos Oz's fable, published by Chatto & Windus in hardcover (144 pages, in English).
In a remote village, the animals and birds disappeared years ago and almost no one speaks of them, except the teacher and an old man. When a marginalized boy who dreamed of animals disappears, brave Maya and her friend Matti explore the forest and find the refuge of Nehi, the Mountain Demon, who stole the creatures in revenge for having been rejected.
Translated from the Hebrew by Sondra Silverston, it was originally published in 2005 as «פתאום בעומק היער».
Intended for readers aged 10 to 17, it has also been described as a fable for children and adults.

Amos Oz was an Israeli writer, novelist, journalist, and intellectual. He was also a professor of Hebrew literature at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. From 1967 onwards, Oz was a prominent advocate of a two-state solution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
