«Suite Française» is the historical novel by Irène Némirovsky, published by Vintage in paperback (516 pages, in English).
In two parts, the novel follows Parisians fleeing the German invasion in 1940 and a rural community forced to live alongside the occupying soldiers. The choral portrait of aristocrats, bourgeois, peasants and women who resist or fall in love with the enemy reveals selfishness, hypocrisy and also unexpected nobility and love.
English translation by Sandra Smith; the author wrote the work in French from 1941, and of the four or five planned parts only two were finished when she died in 1942.
It is suitable for readers of historical fiction and fiction about the Second World War, particularly the German occupation of France.

Irène Némirovsky was a novelist of Ukrainian Jewish origin who was born in Kiev, then in the Russian Empire. She lived more than half her life in France and wrote in French, but was denied French nationality. Arrested as a Jew under the racial laws – which did not take into account her conversion to Roman Catholicism – she died in Auschwitz at the age of 39. Némirovsky is best known for the posthumously published Suite française.
