«Tristano muere: una vida» is a novel by Italian writer Antonio Tabucchi published in 2005 by Círculo de Lectores (hardcover, 189 pages, in Spanish).
A man on the brink of death reviews his existence in a feverish monologue, among memories, desires and guilt, while a writer listens and transcribes. The protagonist, Tristano, an official hero of World War II, becomes filled with shadows and contradictions; the novel explores memory, history and the meaning of heroism in the face of death.
Translation by Carlos Gumpert of the Italian original «Tristano muore: una vita», published in 2004.
For readers of contemporary literary fiction interested in historical memory, World War II and the ambiguities of heroism.

Antonio Tabucchi was an Italian writer and academic who taught Portuguese language and literature at the University of Siena, Italy. Deeply in love with Portugal, he was an expert, critic and translator of the works of Fernando Pessoa from whom he drew the conceptions of saudade, of fiction and of the heteronyms. Tabucchi was first introduced to Pessoa's works in the 1960s when attending the Sorbonne. He was so charmed that when he returned to Italy, he took an introductory course in Portuguese for a better comprehension of the poet.
