In 1962, Maya Angelou, while visiting Accra with her son, attempts the experience of 'returning' to Africa. At the time, Ghana, led by Kwame Nkrumah, was fighting for the emancipation of the Black continent and was seen as a 'promised land' by African Americans in search of their roots. The experience proves difficult for many members of the diaspora, unable to communicate with the Ghanaians and wounded by the indifference or mistrust they encounter. Maya, who finds a job and learns Fanti, meets Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and W.E.B. Du Bois during her stay. In 1964, more combative than ever, she takes a plane ticket back to America.
