«Un puñado de estrellas» is the young adult novel by Rafik Schami, published by Círculo de Lectores in paperback (235 pages, in Spanish).
A teenager from Damascus who wants to be a journalist writes a diary about his daily life in a society where censorship and fear limit freedom of expression. His entries portray the tension between personal dreams and an environment that punishes dissent, and show how writing becomes a form of resistance.
«Eine Hand voller Sterne» is the original title; this edition belongs to the Onda Joven collection and is translated by José Miguel Rodríguez Clemente. Mildred L. Batchelder Award.
For young readers and for those seeking coming-of-age novels set in the Middle East; common reading in high schools.
Rafik Schami is a Syrian-German author, storyteller and critic.
