«White Spirit» is the novel by Paule Constant, published by Debate in hardcover in 1991, in Spanish.
In Africa, three characters run the store «El Recurso del Africano»: Lola, a mulatto woman who dreams of being white and blonde; Alexis, a chimpanzee who forgets he is a monkey; and Víctor, a twenty-year-old emigrant. Prostitutes, the sick, preachers and outcasts react with envy, passion or hatred. A bitter fable about dark and luminous forces.
The novel won the Grand Prix du Roman de l'Académie française in 1990; its first edition dates from 1989.
