«Yo, el rey» is a volume containing two novels by Juan Antonio Vallejo-Nágera and Francisco Umbral, published by Círculo de Lectores in hardcover (519 pages, in Spanish).
It brings together two novels: the first, by Vallejo-Nágera, recounts the brief reign of José I Bonaparte in Spain, and the second, by Umbral, evokes adolescence, provincial life and the miracle-mongering of the postwar period through figures such as Pius XII, Millán Astray, the Virgin of Fátima and Franco's Moorish Guard.
«Yo, el rey» won the Premio Planeta 1985 and «Pío XII, la escolta mora y un general sin ojo» was a finalist in the same edition.
For readers of Spanish fiction who want to contrast two eras: the Spain of José I and postwar memory.
