Ruth Krauss was born in Baltimore in 1901 and showed a deep passion for reading, writing, and drawing from a very young age.
At the age of fourteen, she left formal school to dedicate herself exclusively to the study of art and the violin.
She received her academic training at the Parsons School of Fine and Applied Art in New York and also studied anthropology at Columbia University.
She was married to the fellow children's author and illustrator Crockett Johnson, with whom she shared her creative vocation.
She is globally recognized for her work The Carrot Seed, one of the nearly fifty publications she dedicated to children's literature.
