Leon Uris was born in Baltimore to a Polish immigrant father who worked as a paperhanger.
Despite never graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of seventeen.
His experiences in the South Pacific during World War II inspired his debut novel, Battle Cry.
