«Allegro bárbaro» is the historical novel by José Luis de Vilallonga, published by Plaza & Janés in paperback (250 pages, in Spanish, 1978).
Set in Spain immediately before the Civil War, the novel follows an old aristocratic family dominated by an authoritarian matriarch. Their decline and blindness reflect a whole society heading toward its end amid exploding bombs and the sordidness of crumbling privileges.
Translated from the French by Concha Serra Ramoneda. The novel belongs to the Varia collection of Plaza & Janés.

José Luis de Vilallonga y Cabeza de Vaca, 9th Marquess of Castellbell, GE was a Spanish nobleman, author, socialite and film actor. His peculiar character, described as "a mixture of aristocratic arrogance, self-confidence and unconcern", brought him frequent enmities with other public figures. He was known to be a multifaceted, charming, elegant and playboy-like figure. At his death in 2007, Vilallonga was referred to by several newspapers as "the last dandy".
