«El diablo cojuelo» is a picaresque novel by Luis Vélez de Guevara, published in paperback (93 pages, in Spanish).
The protagonist, the student Cleofás, frees the devil Cojuelo from a bottle and in return gains the ability to see what happens beneath the rooftops of Madrid. Thanks to this privileged perspective, the work satirically portrays the customs, vices, and characters of seventeenth-century Spanish society.
Work originally published in 1641; the 1993 edition belongs to the literature and fiction category. ISBN 9788488752017.
A read for those who appreciate the picaresque novel and the social satire of seventeenth-century Spanish literature.

Luis Vélez de Guevara was a Spanish dramatist and novelist. He was born at Écija and was of Jewish converso descent. After graduating as a sizar at the University of Osuna in 1596, he joined the household of Rodrigo de Castro, Cardinal-Archbishop of Seville, and celebrated the marriage of Philip III in a poem signed Vélez de Santander, a name which he continued to use until some years later.
