«El obsceno pájaro de la noche» is the novel by Chilean writer José Donoso, published by Planeta in paperback (404 pages, in Spanish).
The Azcoitía family, Chilean landowners of noble lineage, embodies an upper class that is hated, envied, and feared. Mudito narrates a world headed for deterioration and the dissolution of identity; the old women of the Casa de la Encarnación de la Chimba and the monsters of the Rinconada reflect desperation and the small daily pleasures.
Novel originally published in 1970; this 1997 edition belongs to the Clásicos Contemporáneos Internacionales collection.
Recommended for readers interested in Latin American narrative, magical realism, and twentieth-century classics.

José Manuel Donoso Yáñez, was a Chilean writer, journalist and professor. He lived most of his life in Chile, although he spent many years in self-imposed exile in Mexico, the United States and Spain. Although he stated that he had left Chile in the 1960s for personal reasons, after 1973 his exile was also a form of protest against the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. He returned to Chile in 1981 and lived there until his death in 1996.
