El obsceno pájaro de la noche is a novel by Chilean writer José Donoso, published in 1970. Considered one of the most important works of the Latin American Boom, the novel explores themes of identity, power, and madness through a complex and experimental narrative. The story unfolds in an oppressive and surreal atmosphere, where the characters struggle to find meaning in a chaotic and decadent world. With its innovative style and deep analysis of the human condition, El obsceno pájaro de la noche remains an influential work in contemporary literature.

José Manuel Donoso Yáñez, was a Chilean writer, journalist and professor. He lived most of his life in Chile, although he spent many years in self-imposed exile in Mexico, the United States and Spain. Although he stated that he had left Chile in the 1960s for personal reasons, after 1973 his exile was also a form of protest against the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. He returned to Chile in 1981 and lived there until his death in 1996.
