«El pez de oro» is the historical novel by Ramón J. Sender, published in 1976 by Destino in paperback (410 pages, in Spanish).
The narrative follows Alexander I of Russia during his stay in Paris after defeating Napoleon, where he meets Dodoette, a young deaf-mute woman from a troupe of comedians, and ends up taking her to Russia. Sender combines the intimate portrait of the emperor —educated in enlightened despotism and a lover of the arts— with life at the Russian court in the early nineteenth century.
Published by Destino in Barcelona, in the Ancora y Delfín collection (no. 486), it is the first edition of 1976.

Ramón José Sender Garcés was a Spanish novelist, essayist and journalist. Several of his works were translated into English by the distinguished zoologist, Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell, including Seven Red Sundays , Mr Witt Among the Rebels and The War in Spain (Contraataque). He published articles in the Valencia-based Orto magazine between 1932 and 1934. During the Spanish Civil War Sender was among the contributors of El Mono Azul, a Republican literary magazine.
