On a dark autumn night, a young girl disappears without a trace in Sandhamn. Police Inspector Thomas Andreasson participates in the search, which is hampered by storms and rain. Eventually, the police give up and the girl is assumed to have drowned.
A few months later, Sandhamn is covered in snow and ice. Thomas' childhood friend Nora Linde happens to find out that her husband has been unfaithful to her. Desperate, she goes to the island with her sons to think in peace and quiet. One day, while the children are playing in the forest, they make a macabre discovery.
The missing girl has been killed and desecrated in a terrible way. Why has she been subjected to such rage? And will the killer strike again?
I grunden utan skuld is Viveca Sten's third crime novel in the popular Sandhamn series. Here we also follow the young Thorwald, who grows up on the island in the early 20th century. Finally, the stories converge and it turns out that the past lives on in the present.
