«La forja de un ladrón» is the novel by Francisco Umbral, published by Planeta in hardcover (246 pages, in Spanish).
The novel follows a boy marked by the Spanish Civil War, World War II and the postwar period. In a Spain of black market and hardship, the protagonist is shaped on the fringes of the city, where theft is also a school of life. Umbral turns that education into a story about memory, childhood and identity.
It won the Fernando Lara Novel Prize in 1997. It belongs to the «Francesillo» series by Francisco Umbral.
For readers of contemporary Spanish fiction interested in the Civil War and the postwar period.
