«Los helechos arborescentes» is the novel by Francisco Umbral, published in 2001 by Bibliotex in hardcover (190 pages, in Spanish).
Francesillo is a child living two parallel lives while centuries of Spanish history parade before his eyes: the picaresque, the grotesque of Goya and Valle-Inclán, and the encounter with Franco. Umbral composes an expressionist mural intertwining culture, people, and solitude in an agonizing vision, both nostalgic and pathetic.
This novel, with a prologue by Ramón Tamames, belongs to the «Francesillo» series and the collection «Las cien mejores novelas en castellano del siglo XX».
For readers of 20th-century Spanish fiction and those who want to discover the work of Francisco Umbral.
