«Los helechos arborescentes» is the novel by Francisco Umbral, published by Planeta in paperback (288 pages, in Spanish).
The narrative follows Francesillo, a timeless child who emerges from tenebrist paintings and traverses the picaresque of the Golden Age, the esperpento of Goya and Valle-Inclán, and a hallucinatory encounter with Franco. With this fabulated memoir, Umbral composes a great expressionist mural of the history of Spain and its civil wars.
The work was published in 1999, belongs to the «Francesillo» series, and opens with a prologue by Eduardo Haro Tecglen.
Francisco Alejandro Pérez Martínez, better known as Francisco Umbral, was a Spanish journalist, novelist, biographer and essayist.
