«La montaña blanca» is the novel by Jorge Semprún, published by Alfaguara in paperback (304 pages, in Spanish).
Jorge Larrea, a recurring character in Semprún's fiction, travels through a divided Europe and encounters past loves again. The title evokes the white mountain as a symbol of oblivion and reconstruction, in a plot of mature, jealous, and frustrated loves that includes a forty-year friendship.
Spanish translation by Emma Calatayud; the work was originally published in 1986 with the French title «La montagne blanche».

Jorge Semprún Maura was a Spanish writer and politician who lived in France most of his life and wrote primarily in French. After the death of Franco and the change to a democratic government, he served as Minister of Culture in Spain's socialist government from 1988 to 1991.
