In a dystopian future where fertility has drastically declined, the Republic of Gilead, ruled by religious fanatics, subjects the few remaining fertile women to sexual slavery. Defred, one of these "scarlet maids," is forced to serve her Commander and his wife, stripping her of her name and rights. However, Defred remembers a time when women could read and work, and joins a secret network in the hope of regaining her freedom. This 2017 edition, published by Robert Laffont, presents the story in French and is a reflection on the fragility of individual freedoms.
