«La Souveraine» is the novel by Nina Berberova, published by Actes Sud in hardcover (160 pages, in French).
One night with Lena, a rich upper-class woman, transforms Sacha, a young Russian emigrant in Paris. On waking, he no longer recognizes the city or his own: his brother, his sister-in-law and his best friend seem miserable to him. Friendship confronts love and sensuality becomes freer in this story of déclassement and emigration.
The original title is «Повелительница» (1932); this French edition appeared in 1994. Translated from the Russian by Cécile Térouanne.
For readers of literary fiction interested in Russian emigration, déclassement, and conflicts of friendship and love.
Nina Nikolayevna Berberova was a Russian writer who chronicled the lives of anti-communist Russian refugees in Paris in her short stories and novels. She visited post-Soviet Russia. Her 1965 revision of the Constance Garnett translation of Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina with Leonard J. Kent was considered by the academic Zoja Pavlovskis-Petit to be the best translation before 2000.
