«La terrazza proibita. Vita nell'harem» is the memoir by Fatima Mernissi, published by Giunti Editore in paperback (240 pages, in Italian).
Fatima Mernissi evokes her childhood in a harem in Fez in the 1940s, in a Morocco divided between tradition and modernization. The narrative interweaves the private and the public, confronts stereotypes and idealized visions of the harem, and explores cultural memory alongside the desire for female freedom.
The work was originally published in 1994 as 'Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood'. This Italian edition belongs to the Superastrea series and is translated by Rosa Rita D'Acquarica.
For readers of memoirs, gender studies and Moroccan culture.
Fatema Mernissi was a Moroccan feminist writer and sociologist.
