«Magnus» is the contemporary novel by Sylvie Germain, published by Folio in paperback (263 pages, in French).
Franz-Georg, born in Germany before the war, retains no memory of his childhood; his only witness is Magnus, a teddy bear with a singed ear. To rebuild himself, he must unlearn the past invented for him and confront a memory made of silences and lies, in an inquiry into identity marked by History.
The work was originally published in 2005 and received the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens that same year; the Folio edition is from 2007.
The work is recommended reading for those who enjoy contemporary literary fiction and novels that explore memory and the imprint of History.
