«Mémoires d'outre-tombe» is an annotated edition by Fabienne Serin-Moyal of Chateaubriand's memoirs, published by Hatier in paperback (160 pages).
Chateaubriand wrote these memoirs as one speaking from the grave: the work covers his childhood in Brittany, the journey to the New World, exile and his political career, while France moves from the Ancien Régime to the age of progress. The text combines historical chronicle, introspection and a melancholy tinged with irony.
2004 edition, part of the Œuvres & thèmes collection and the Classiques Hatier line. Includes six complementary autobiographical extracts.
Designed for secondary and high school students studying French literature or the autobiographical genre in the school curriculum.

François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand was a French writer, politician, diplomat and historian who influenced French literature of the 19th century. Descended from an old aristocratic family from Brittany, Chateaubriand was a royalist by political disposition. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1822 to 1824 and as the French ambassador to Sweden, Prussia, the United Kingdom, and the Papal States.
