A novel combining personal memory and grotesque satire: a teenager in a small Spanish town in the 1940s witnesses the war's rearguard and everyday postwar life. With irony and melancholy, Umbral mixes seemingly minor characters and episodes with figures such as Pius XII, Millán Astray, or Our Lady of Fátima.
