«Refranero anticlerical» is a collection of sayings and quotes by José Esteban, published by Vosa in paperback (132 pages, in Spanish).
The volume brings together popular sayings and proverbs born in Spain against the power of the Church and its clergy. The author trawls archives and libraries to recover a scattered and often silenced oral tradition, peopled with gluttonous priests, dissolute nuns, self-serving friars, avaricious sextons and selfish bishops, and presents it as a heterodox compendium of anticlerical criticism.
It is part of the collection 'La Nave de los locos', of which it is number 2. This edition was published in Madrid in 1994.
For readers interested in Spanish oral tradition, popular proverbs and historical criticism of clericalism.
