«Seda» is the novel by Italian writer Alessandro Baricco, published by Círculo de Lectores in hardcover (144 pages, in Spanish).
Set in the nineteenth century, it recounts the journeys of Hervé Joncour, a French trader in silkworm eggs, to a Japan still closed to the West. Between Europe and Japan, the story weaves together desire and distance in brief, lyrical prose in which what is left unnamed weighs as much as what is said.
Translation by Xavier González Rovira and Carlos Gumpert. The Italian original is titled «Seta». The novel was originally published in 1996; this Círculo de Lectores edition is from 2008.
For readers of contemporary, historical and romantic fiction who value a short story set between France and Japan.
