«El obsceno pájaro de la noche» is the novel by José Donoso, published by El País in hardcover (521 pages, in Spanish).
The voice of Mudito narrates a decaying universe, populated by old women of the Casa de la Encarnación de la Chimba and deformed beings of the Rinconada, embodying the loss of identity, despair and small everyday pleasures. Donoso blends reality and fantasy in an obsessive prose to explore madness and power.
Originally published in 1970; this edition appeared in 2003 within the Clásicos del Siglo XX collection.
For readers of Latin American fiction and magical realism who appreciate formal experimentation.

José Manuel Donoso Yáñez, was a Chilean writer, journalist and professor. He lived most of his life in Chile, although he spent many years in self-imposed exile in Mexico, the United States and Spain. Although he stated that he had left Chile in the 1960s for personal reasons, after 1973 his exile was also a form of protest against the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. He returned to Chile in 1981 and lived there until his death in 1996.
