«My Forbidden Face» is the autobiographical testimony of Latifa, published by Virago Press in paperback (190 pages, in English).
Latifa, who dreamed of becoming a journalist, was 16 when the Taliban took Kabul in 1996. Her school closed and she became a prisoner in her own home, forced to wear the chadri. As an act of defiance, she created a clandestine school for other young women. The book, in the first person, tells of her world destroyed by the regime and her escape from Afghanistan with her parents in 2001.
Work written with the collaboration of Chekeba Hachemi. Originally published in French as «Visage volé» (2001), this English edition appeared in November 2002.
For readers of memoirs, recent Afghan history and testimonies on women's rights under the Taliban regime.

Latifa, Lateefa or Lateefah is a feminine Arabic (لٓطِيفٓة) given name which means "gentle", "nice" or "pleasant". It corresponds to the masculine Latif.
