«The Auschwitz Violin» is the historical novel by Maria Àngels Anglada, published by Corsair in paperback (131 pages, in English).
An elderly woman plays an exceptional-sounding violin in Kraków; when a musician asks, she tells her story. In Auschwitz, Daniel, a violin maker before the war, becomes the center of a bet between the camp commandant and the doctor: build a violin within a deadline or be handed over to the torturer.
This English edition, translated by Martha Tennent, came out in 2011; the original Catalan appeared in 1983 as El violí d'Auschwitz.
For readers of historical fiction about the Holocaust, with an interest in music and art's resistance to dehumanization.
