The most personal and autobiographical novel by Irène Némirovsky, originally published in 1935, recreates the fate of a wealthy Russian family who fled to Paris after the revolution. Through an intelligent and sharp gaze, the story follows young Elena's growth from her childhood in Ukraine to her adulthood in France, narrating her complex coming-of-age journey and her desire for revenge against her mother, a frivolous woman who despises her. This edition brings us closer to one of the most incisive voices of 20th-century literature, exploring the pain of childhood and family tensions with masterful prose.

Irène Némirovsky was a novelist of Ukrainian Jewish origin who was born in Kiev, then in the Russian Empire. She lived more than half her life in France and wrote in French, but was denied French nationality. Arrested as a Jew under the racial laws – which did not take into account her conversion to Roman Catholicism – she died in Auschwitz at the age of 39. Némirovsky is best known for the posthumously published Suite française.
