«Inventer l'actualité» is the essay by Laurent Gervereau, published by La Découverte in paperback (158 pages, in French).
Based on a daily survey of front pages and television newscasts in five European countries, the U.S. and Algeria during 2003, it shows how a few countries dominate world news and how the pursuit of emotion and exclusives theatricalizes the news. It rules out a global conspiracy and points to the conformisms that prevent a plurality of perspectives.
It was published in Paris in 2004 in the Cahiers libres collection by La Découverte. The paperback edition has 158 pages in French.
